Our technical director Paul was recently invited to speak to students at the Manchester Metropolitan University School of Digital Arts about Sustainable Web Design.

The session included around 30 learners made up of Year 1 UX apprentices and Year 3 Web & UX students. The students were very engaging, asked lots of great questions and it was heartening to see their enthusiasm towards designing accessible and low-carbon websites.

Our technical director Paul discussing Sustainable Web Design with students at MMU’s School of Digital Arts.

During the session we discussed:

  • Why Sustainable Web Design matters.
  • Why low-carbon web design is good for businesses as well as the planet.
  • Different tools for calculating a websites CO2 emissions.
  • The basic theory behind reducing the environmental impact of digital services.
  • Our top tips for making websites more energy-efficient.

We then completed a group exercise optimising a basic web page graded F on the Website Carbon Calculator to a grade A in a few simple steps.

Course Leader Christine Charnock said “It was a really insightful session, with learners taking away practical tips on how to make digital products more sustainable. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!”

We’d like to give a big thank you to Christine for your kind words and for inviting us to work with the next generation of sustainable web designers.
