FareShare is a UK charity network that aims to relieve food poverty and reduce food waste by redistributing surplus food from restaurants and supermarkets to frontline charities and community groups.

We are very proud to have developed a new website to promote FareShare’s Where’s the Food? manifesto detailing how the government, businesses, and charities can contribute to positive change by redistributing good-to-eat surplus food.

The site was designed by our collaborator Pine Design Studio using brand guidelines created by FareShare’s in-house design team and then developed by us into a mobile friendly and low-carbon website.

sustainable web design techniques

The website was developed using our usual array of low-carbon web design techniques to ensure it loads fast and has a minimal carbon footprint.

  • Photography and graphics are optimised using a lossless compression tool before being converted to the modern WEBP format. Images also use lazy-loading so they only load in as the visitor scrolls down to them.
  • The design uses a system font, Arial, which does not need to download to the visitors device as it will be already installed. Arial is a sans-serif font with good clarity and legibility which is great for website accessibility.
  • The site is hosted on optimised, Green Web Foundation certified WordPress hosting provided by 34SP.
  • We also created a second Dark Mode stylesheet, which inverts the colour scheme for visitors who prefer this setting and uses less energy than the default light colour scheme.

The result is an energy efficient, low-carbon website that is rated A on the Website Carbon Calculator.
