Sustain Video are a video production company based in Derbyshire who create world class content with a local heart. When they aren’t producing global sports and children’s television they are supporting local communities that make a positive environmental or social impact. Just our sort of people!
We originally worked alongside Goodness Marketing to perform a website review of Sustain’s previous site before they commissioned us to implement our findings as a new low-carbon website build.
The brief was simple! They asked us to create a professional, clean design to best present their fantastic video content and beautiful studio photography.
This led us to design a spacious layout with white and light grey backgrounds to help their colourful visuals stand out alongside Sustain’s green and blue brand colours as accents.
We also introduced some subtle movement on button hovers and the contact form slide-out as a small salute to their motion graphics work.

sustainable web design techniques
The main challenge with this project is that video files are typically very large and not suited to low-carbon web design. So how do you present the work of a video production company whilst optimising video content for energy-efficiency?
- Video embeds only load in when someone requests to play them (for example clicking the Showreel button).
- The video files then load in gradually as they play so will only download fully if the visitor watches to the end.
- All photography is sized appropriately, compressed and converted to the efficient WEBP format. Images also only load in as the visitor scrolls down to them.
- The site is hosted on optimised, Green Web Foundation certified WordPress hosting provided by 34SP.
- We also created a second Dark Mode stylesheet, which inverts the colour scheme for visitors who prefer this setting and uses less energy than the default light colour scheme.
The result is an energy efficient, low-carbon website that is rated A on the Website Carbon Calculator.
