The Collections Trust is an independent UK charity that works with museums, libraries and galleries worldwide to improve the management and use of their collections.
In partnership with the Museums Association their Find an Object service helps museums rehome objects to other organisations around the UK as part of their ethical disposals process.
Having worked with the Collections Trust previously on the Museum Data Service website we were tasked with the complete rebuild of the existing Find an Object system.

Key Features
Users can create an account to list objects from their museum they wish to rehome. Other users can then search for and make enquiries about any listed objects available on the site as well as save favourite objects and searches for future reference.
Key transaction milestones such as enquiries and negotiations are saved to the object’s audit log which can be exported as a PDF for admin use later.
The site also integrates with the Museum Data Service API allowing users to enter an object’s unique reference ID on the upload form to pull through any available ‘spectrum’ data from the MDS. Once again we worked alongside our friend Jack Barber at Hello Technology to complete this functionality.
Further to this, objects can be added in bulk using a CSV import tool.
Low-carbon techniques
We built the Find an Object website with care and attention to ensure it loads fast with a minimal carbon footprint. Some of the low-carbon web design practices we employed included:
- Ensuring all images were sized appropriately, compressed and converted to the efficient WEBP format. Images also only load in as the visitor scrolls down to them.
- Only loading in functional Javascript files on the pages they are required to reduce page load.
- Using the web safe font Arial, which already comes installed on user devices without needing to be downloaded.
- Hosting the site on optimised, Green Web Foundation certified WordPress hosting provided by 34SP.
You can learn more about how we build our website’s to be as efficiant as possible in our Website Optimisation guides.
